What is a Facebook video transcript?

A transcript is a text record of the words spoken in a video. ShortTranscript reads the audio from an accessible Facebook video, then organizes the recognized speech into editable segments with timestamps. Captions do not need to be enabled, and the post description is not used as a substitute for speech.

Use it to revisit an explanation, make notes from an interview or prepare subtitles for your own video. Review the transcript against the recording before quoting it.

How to get a transcript from a Facebook video

1. Copy the video permalink

Open the public video or Reel and copy its full link. Paste it above. We check the recording and show its duration and allowance.

2. Confirm transcription

Check the quote, then start. Free use covers 3 successful transcripts a day, up to 5 minutes each, shared across supported platforms.

3. Review and export

Edit recognized words without changing their timestamps. Copy or save TXT free; credits unlock SRT, VTT and DOCX.

Usage guide: when a Facebook link will not work

Check that the link opens the specific video without requiring a Facebook login. Avoid profile pages, private groups, Stories, photos, ad-library pages and removed posts. Platform access restrictions may still prevent retrieval even when a link looks public.

If you have an authorized MP3, MP4, WAV or M4A copy, use the Upload tab. A failed transcription releases the reserved free attempt or credits; retrying a removed or restricted link cannot make it accessible.

Free recordings can be up to 5 minutes. For the paid duration and file-size limits, see the FAQ below and current credit pricing. Captions and document exports have separate entitlement rules from free TXT.

Facebook transcript FAQ

How do I get a transcript of a Facebook video?

Open a public recorded video or Reel, copy its video permalink and paste it into the tool. Review the duration and allowance, confirm transcription, then edit the timestamped text and export it.

Is Facebook video transcription free?

You get 3 successful free transcripts per UTC day, each up to 5 minutes, shared across supported platforms and uploads. No sign-up is needed for free use. The service shows any trial-budget pause before processing.

Does this work with Facebook Reels?

Yes, public recorded Reels with an accessible audio track are supported. Use a facebook.com/reel/ video permalink. Link availability can change, so a public link is not a guarantee that the platform will allow retrieval.

Which Facebook URL formats can I paste?

Use a /reel/ID, /PAGE/videos/ID, /watch/?v=ID or /video.php?v=ID video link. If the Share menu gives you a shortened /share/ link, open it and copy the full video permalink from your browser. Profile, group, photo and ad-library pages are not supported.

Can I transcribe a Facebook live stream?

Active live streams are not supported. A finished broadcast may work once Facebook makes it available as a public, recorded video with a supported permalink. The full recording must fit the current item limits.

Can it access a private group or a login-only video?

No. We do not use your Facebook account or ask for its password. Private, restricted, removed or otherwise inaccessible videos cannot be retrieved. Upload a file only if you have permission to process it.

Can I download a Facebook transcript as SRT?

TXT and copying are free. SRT, VTT and DOCX require credits: unlock a free transcript for 1 credit once, or use paid transcription with exports included. This service does not download the source video for you.

Can I transcribe a long video or just one section?

The free limit is 5 minutes. Paid processing supports up to 60 minutes and 100 MB per item. We process the entire submitted recording; time-range selection and automatic splitting are not available. Prepare a shorter authorized file yourself if needed.

Are captions required, and which languages work?

Captions are not required: speech recognition uses the audio, not the post description. English is currently verified. This is not a translation service, and text visible only on screen is not transcribed.

What happens if the clip has music but no clear speech?

Music alone is not a spoken transcript. Faint or unintelligible voices may also produce no reliable words. If no valid transcript is delivered, the reserved credit or free attempt is released.

Is ShortTranscript affiliated with Facebook?

No. ShortTranscript is independent of Facebook and Meta. Only process content you own, that is publicly accessible, or that you are authorized to use; transcription does not grant rights to republish it.

Transcribe other platforms

Use the same private editor with a public Instagram Reel or a TikTok video. For a clip you want to study as a script, try the TikTok script extractor and manual worksheet.
